The start of Times Tables GameHoe het Reken Tafel Spel begon

Our oldest daughter (7 years) is in group 4, which means that the tables have to be learned. I used to recite them aloud in class. But my impression is that this is not so anymore. At least not at a Montessori school.

Approximately every two weeks the kids have as a times tables test. The first one is the times table of 1, two weeks later 10, then both together. The children each get 40 key questions to answer in 2 minutes. And have to write the answer.

The first three test she did fine. But with the times table of 2 and further, it got a lot harder. So we went to practice. I printed a few sheets of 40 questions, and we practiced with the oven timer. Wandering thoughts and other distractions were major challenges. But she gradually got better. “In the third row now!” she yelled after practicing a few times. And on Thursday, the day before the test, she managed it. All 40 questions in mixed order in 2 minutes. She aced the test!

It turned out as a short time victory. The times table of 5 showed that it did not work to practice with the 40-questions-into-2-minutes sheets. The times table of 5 was new to her. She first had to learn it a bit before she could train on speed. What now?

A friend of us gave advice. “Do the flash cards’. ‘Print cards with the questions on one side, and the answer on the other side. This way she can practice by herself, flip the card of which she doesn’t know the answer. She can do them alone, with you, in order or mixed.’ That worked very well. She learned the questions of a new table with the flash cards. A stack of printed cards by daddy and on the backside she wrote the answers herself.

The “flash cards” has become the basis of the Times Tables Game. A simple idea that resulted in an app for the smartphone. The kids thought it was interesting on the phone. But they were soon lost interest. When I added pictures with attractive colors the liked it. I worked on the gameplay a bit. Gradually I modified it and showed it to a few friends and colleague. ‘Why don’t you put it in the Market’ was the response.

During the Christmas holidays (2011) I made the app suitable for upload to the market. That was pretty easy because of the step by step explanation. The screenshots and appropriate texts took time.

Now 3 weeks later and 3 update the Times Tables Game Table is downloaded 3000 times. How wonderful that it appeals to others as well! But most important, my kids love it and learn by it! Out next daughter (5 years) is very good now at the times table 1 and 10 🙂Onze oudste dochter (7 jaar) zit in groep 4 en dat betekent dat de tafels geleerd moeten worden.

Dus gingen we oefenen.
